The professional writer Jim Williamson

The cartoon(ist) Jim Williamson

Writer/Artist

He was soon contributing comic strips and panel cartoons to some of the smaller local newspapers.  Switching to theatre, Jim wrote and performed in such sketch-comedy shows as Pun: A Play On Words, and Laurel & Hardy’s Vaudeville Theatre before launching his own company, A Theatre Near You (aka ATNY) and writing such one-man stage shows as 100 Celebrities in 45 Minutes, I Gotta Be Them and The Divisible Man.

Jim then branched out into radio and TV, first joining the CBC Radio series Definitely Not The Opera, for whom he wrote host copy, promos, and sketch comedy (also performing in sketches). Jim’s writing was shortlisted for both the CBC Radio Literary Contest in Winnipeg and the Scriptapalooza Screenwriting Contest in Hollywood.

This led to a stint at CKX TV for whom he wrote commercial scripts, as well as coordinated and supervised filming and editing, and a further stint in the fledgling internet business by working for WorldStar Online Travel Services as a Web Page Designer and Marketing Coordinator.

He then quit acting and drawing to settle in as Communications Officer at Manitoba Public Insurance, providing copy, content and message creation and editing for internal and external multi-media communications. He was occasionally called upon to act in some of the commercials and used his drawing skills numerous times to provide rough outlines of the print ads and storyboards for the TV commercials. He interviewed subjects, wrote, proofed, and edited hundreds of multi-media marketing materials; web, radio, print ads and TV commercials, plus writing 52 episodes of a Shaw TV series for Manitoba Public Insurance and 25 corporate videos for showing in the U.S. and Europe.

Jim relocated to Kelowna, British Columbia where he provided advertising writing/consulting (i. e. web SEO content writing, business proposal writing, blogging and social media) to various businesses. He has also worked in journalism, writing reviews and personality profiles amongst other articles.  He continued studies in graphic design, web design, filmmaking, recording, and photography. In 2014 he

joined Kelowna Museums, working in its Marketing, Communications, Events, and Rentals divisions.  As of 2017 he was pursuing similar opportunities in Winnipeg.

He revived some old characters from his comedy stage shows with a mix of new ones, plus improvisation and some straight instruction, in a web TV show called Too Commercial!  He then resumed cartooning and now has a comic strip in development. He has also written a novel.
